At the Galway Volvo Ocean Race Festival, which ran from May 25th to June 6th, the ECI and the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences (EOS) co-ordinated a very successful stand—cleverly coined
From Raindrops to Reefs
by Dr. Sadhbh Baxter of EOS—to engage with visiting school groups, and the general public, about some of our marine based research.
Outgoing volunteers were on hand to demonstrate the wonders of Irish deep sea corals as well as the circulation systems at work in Galway Bay. Video footage of the newly discovered coral reef province, just off the southern end of the Porcupine Bank, was displayed from the FP7 CoralFISH project. Grab samples showing sediment composition and fossilised coral provided a glimpse of life 600m below the ocean surface.
Visitors took great delight in racing foam sea critters around a working model of Galway Bay. Purpose built for the Griffith Biogeoscience project, the model demonstrated the role currents might have played for the Green Dragon entering the bay.
Many thanks to all the volunteers who devoted their time and energy to helping out—it was a very successful and enjoyable two weeks.
