The aim of the module is to give the student an insight into severe mental illness (SMI) and the adverse effects it can have on the client’s physical and mental health. The role of the health care professional will be explored in providing for the physical wellbeing of clients. The module will equip the student with the tools to carry out a detailed physical health assessment in clients with severe mental illness. This module will be delivered on-line and will run over 10 weeks. Students will be provided with electronic course materials (similar to a study guide) to guide their learning and reading. Students will work through the workbook and complete units (see below) by a specified date. A facilitator will be available to students on-line, to answer queries and provide references to further reading. Students will also attend two workshop days that is focused on the application of their learning to the clinical setting.
There are three units in this module:
Unit 1: Overview of severe mental illness
Unit 2: Severe mental illness and the physical illnesses that can be potentially induced by treatment regimes
Unit 3: The health improvement profile (HIP)
Target Market
This module is multidisciplinary and welcomes applications from healthcare professionals from the wider multidisciplinary team (including medical doctors, MHN’s, RGN’S, practice nurses, public health nurses, RNID’s, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists) in acute, care of the older person, rehabilitation, continued care and community services.
Prerequisite
- Applicants must be registered healthcare professionals currently working in an Irish primary care setting.
