Nursing and Midwifery Undergraduate Students also have the opportunity to have a study abroad experience in Fairfield University Connecticut, USA. Fairfield University was founded in 1942 and has 35 undergraduate majors and a student population of 3,300. The university is distinguished by a rigorous curriculum, close interaction among faculty and students and a beautiful 200-acre campus with views of Long Island Sound. Fairfield University is located one hour north of New York City. An excellent train service makes New York, Boston and Washington easily accessible for students who wish to explore the area. Fairfield University has close links to NUI, Galway and each year two students who are awarded the highest marks in the First Year Bachelor of Nursing Science Programme (General) are offered an opportunity to do Semester 2 Year 2 in the School of Nursing in Fairfield.
The students attend lectures and take modules similiar to those in the General Programme in NUIG. Students also get experience in the clinical areas in hospitals linked to the Fairfield University Nursing programme. Campus accommodation is available in Fairfield and students receive some financial support from the International Office to assist with costs.
Yvonne McDonagh and Laura Rooney on their study abroad experience in Fairfield University, Connecticut
From The Student's Perspective
Here's Yvonne McDonagh speaking of her semester in Fairfield.
"Hearing that I was heading off to Fairfield I was both excited and nervous. Once I arrived at Fairfield's beautiful campus all the nerves were quickly quashed! Members of the International Students society greeted us on our arrival and we became friends that day!
The staff in the nursing department could not have been more welcoming and made sure to integrate us into the class. I learned invaluable practical skills in the labs and really got a feel for the nursing assessment of the individual from head to toe. The scholarship also offered me the chance to travel and I was lucky enough to visit Boston, Washington, Chicago and New York as well as Conneticut itself. I met extremely warm students/housemates and have remained in contact since.
Overall it was a fantastic experience, a big adventure I was very fortunate to get to go on!"
Yvonne McDonagh, 2nd Year Student
