The aim of this module is to enable you to develop the knowledge and skills required to meet the holistic needs of patients in an intensive care environment. This knowledge builds on the previous knowledge and experience which you bring to the programme. It is appropriate to start with a specialist module as you are currently involved in caring for patients in an intensive care setting. The first four sections of this module form the foundation for all other modules and are concerned with the respiratory and cardiovascular system. The aim of this module is to establish an in-depth knowledge of the fundamental principles of intensive care nursing.
This module is comprised of five units, each of them taking two weeks to complete.
Unit 1 and Unit 2 focus on the care of patients with altered oxygenation.
Unit 3 and Unit 4 address the care of patients with altered cardiovascular functioning and haemodynamic monitoring.
Unit 5 explores the evidence available to support clinical issues for units 1-4.
Module Leader: Frances Farrelly
