Biography:

Brendan Kennelly studied economics at University College, Cork and at the University of Maryland, College Park. He has been a lecturer at NUI Galway since 1991. He was a Visiting Professor in the Department of Economics at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania from August 2002 to December 2003 and from January 2010 to August 2011. Brendan Kennelly has published articles on welfare economics, public choice, the welfare state and health economics in journals such as Social Choice and Welfare, Public Choice, Social Science and Medicine, and Health Policy, and in several books.

Much of his recent research has been in health economics, particularly in the area of mental health. He is currently working on a number of projects that evaluate different programmes for preventing suicide and is also working on various economic aspects of mental health problems such as the cost of mental illness and the cost effectiveness of different interventions for mental illnesses.

He has also developed a strong interest in economics education. He has published a number of papers on the effectiveness of online assignments in economics and is currently working on a series of papers that focus on students' preferences for assignment systems.
