Biography

Research Interests

Marie's research interests focus on the nature of urban-rural change and development, and on issues of rural sustainability.  Her research has been funded by the EU and by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences. She has published on urban-rural relationships and development, including the nature of civic engagement and governance, place-based identity and meaning and representations of rurality in fringe locations. She has also published on the governance of spatial planning, particularly issues of spatial justice and participatory democracy.  Recent research has focused on the importance of the arts and culture for rural sustainability and quality of life. Marie is a member of the Centre for Environment, Development and Sustainability,  and the Creative, Liveable and Sustainable Communities Research Cluster, at the Whitaker Institute, NUIG.
