Ms Margaret McGrath B.Sc., M.Sc.

Biography:
|
Margaret is an occupational therapist with a clinical background
in aged related healthcare. Her specialist subjects include occupational
therapy for older people, community based occupational therapy and client
centred practice. Margaret also has a strong interest in the use of service
learning within healthcare education and is responsible for the development of
service learning within the Discipline of Occupational Therapy.
Margaret's research questions arise from her clinical practice
with older people and her ongoing work with local community organisations. Her
research examines processes involved in maintaining independent living in later
life including strategies to cope with barriers in the home environment, health
literacy and health promotion for older people. Margaret also has an
ongoing interest in developing innovative educational practice. This interest
has led to projects examining the use of community-university partnerships in a
European context, exploring the impacts of service learning and the development
of learning technologies to support acquisition of clinical skills by
undergraduate students. |
Research Interests
| Margaret's current research is focused in two main areas (i) Ageing and participation of older people in society and (ii) community-university partnerships. Both areas are connected through an ongoing engagement with community organizations representing the needs of older people and occupational therapists who work with this population. Ageing and participation of older people. PhD studies (supervised by Professor Agnes Shiel, NUI Galway and Dr. Karin Johansson, Karolinska Institutet Sweden) are focused on aging in place. I am interested to identify what strategies older people in Ireland use to handle barriers in their home environment in order to continue to live in the community. I am using a mixed methods design incorporating cross-sectional survey of older adults with a case study methodology to address my research question. I am also interested using participatory action research methods and am currently working on a project in collaboration with COPE Galway Senior Services which addresses strategies used by older people to learn about primary care services in their local community. This work is funded by the the Bright Ideas Initiative, NUI Galway. Community-University Partnerships My research in community-university partnerships has three main strands (i) service learning (ii) European approaches to community collaboration and (iii) community-development approaches in occupational therapy. My work in service learning has been supported by the National Academy for the Integration of Research Teaching and Learning and by the Community Knowledge Initiative, NUI Galway. |
