Biography:
| Michel Destrade is the Established Professor of Applied Mathematics at the National University of Ireland Galway. Previously, he worked successively as a Junior Marie Curie Fellow (FP4) in Mathematical Physics at University College Dublin; as a Visiting Assistant Professor in Mathematics at Texas A&M University, USA; as a Charge de Recherche with the French National Research Agency CNRS at the Institut d'Alembert, Universite Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, France (currently on leave), and as a Senior Marie Curie Fellow (FP7) in Mechanical Engineering at University College Dublin (currently Visiting Professor of Mechanical Engineering). His research interests are in nonlinear elasticity, in stability of elastomers and biological soft tissues, and in linear, linearized, and non-linear waves. In those fields, he has authored or co- authored 2 invited book chapters and more than 80 publications in refereed international journals. He has coordinated an advanced course at the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences in Udine, Italy. He has served as Guest Editor for special issues of International Journal of Nonlinear Mechanics, IMA Journal of Applied Mathematics, and International Journal of Engineering Science. He is currently on the Editorial Board of Proceedings of the Royal Society A, Quarterly Journal of Mechanics and Applied Mathematics, International Journal of Applied Mechanics, and International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics. His research has been supported by grants awarded, among others, by the European Commission; the Royal Society; the British Council; the Agence Nationale pour la Recherche; the CNRS; Science Foundation Ireland; Enterprise Ireland; and IRCSET. |

Badar RASHID joined University College Dublin for a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, co-supervised with Prof. Michael Gilchrist (UCD). He was granted funding from the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology, to work on the modelling of brain matter at dynamic strain rates. PhD thesis: download here. She was granted funding from the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology and from the Irish Department of Justice and Equality, to work on the mechanics of stabbing. He was granted funding from the Universita del Salento and from the Franco-Italian University, to work on the semi-inverse method in solid mechanics and instabilities. She spent one year in Glasgow and completed a Joint PhD awarded by Universite Pierre et Marie Curie and by University of Glasgow. She was granted funding from the French Minister for Science and Technology and from the Stevenson Foundation, to work on waves and surface stability in pre-stressed solids.
