Biography:

Research Interests

My principal research interests include neuroimaging, health service research and the study of essential fatty acids in mental illness, on which my Doctor of Medicine thesis was based. I have been an applicant (co-applicant or lead applicant) for research grants totalling €721,532 to date, and have published 35 peer reviewed articles, many in high impact international journals. I am collaborating with colleagues from Trinity College Dublin, the Institute of Psychiatry, London, the University of Illinois, Chicago and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, Maryland, at present.  A recent project examining the operation and effects of the Mental Health Act involves collaboration with interdisciplinary teams drawn from the National University of Ireland Galway School of Nursing and Midwifery, School of Law and Department of Philosophy as well as the School of Nursing and Midwifery in Trinity College Dublin and the Irish Advocacy Network.

Teaching Interests

I have maintained throughout my career an interest in education and training at both under-graduate and post-graduate level and I have completed a post-graduate diploma in clinical teaching. I convene the Western Post-Graduate Training Scheme in psychiatry. As a member of the curriculum group of the College of Psychiatry of Ireland, I was involved in designing the curriculum for basic specialist trainees, with the year one curriculum now launched. In 2007, I was involved in setting up and was editor of the Video Journals in Psychiatry, (www.vjpsych.ie) an electronic based teaching programme with approximately 100 e-based learning modules for psychiatry trainees and consultant psychiatrists. As senior lecturer in psychiatry in NUI Galway, I am involved in designing the curriculum, organising, delivering, examining and supervising the teaching of medical students in Galway and the three medical academies in Letterkenny, Castlebar and Sligo. I organise and deliver teaching to a range of health disciplines (i.e. the mental health module of the post-gradate diploma in clinical primary care). I lecture and examine for the University of Surrey in Guildford for their Masters in Nutrition.
