Biography

Cynthia Coleman is a Research Fellow in Orthobiologics at the National University of Ireland Galway and a work package leader within the European Union funded REDDSTAR project.  At NUIG she oversees a research program focused on the application of adult human marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells to repair diabetic long bone fractures.  These studies have indicated that diabetic progenitor cells have reduced capacity to chondrogenically or osteogenically differentiate, inhibiting their ability to repair a bone fracture.  Therefore, she hypothesizes that the addition of the chondrogenic growth factor GDF-5 will significantly aid their therapeutic efficacy.  Additionally, she is actively involved in a program to profile the biologic distribution of progenitor cells upon their systemic administration via high throughput molecular techniques.

Cynthia’s professional training bridged academia, research institutions and industry.  She began her research career as a PhD student in Developmental Biology and Teratology at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.  Upon graduation, she began a post doctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in cartilage biology and then transitioned to Boston where she joined Johnson & Johnson Regenerative Therapeutics as a senior scientist in cell biology and preclinical evaluation.  After three years of industrial training, she returned to academia by joining the Regenerative Medicine Institute at NUI Galway where she was promoted from a senior scientist in Orthobiologics (2007) to a Honorary Research Lecturer (2010) and then Research Fellow (2013).

The success of her scientific pursuits is reflected in her 9 published, peer-reviewed original data manuscripts, 5 review manuscripts, 2 peer-reviewed data manuscripts currently in review and 4 manuscripts in preparation.  She has successfully co-authored two European Union Framework 7 applications, thereby securing a total of €8,651,799 in funding for a total of 16 international collaborators.  Additionally, she has co-supervised 4 PhD students, 1 MRes student, 8 BSc interns, 6 MSc students and 1 PhD summer fellow.
