Prof. Frank Barry BSc., MSc., PhD.

Biography:
| Dr. Frank Barry obtained a Bachelor of Science degree (1978) and a Master of Science degree in Biochemistry (1980) from the National University of Ireland (NUI), Cork. In 1984 he completed a PhD programme in Biochemistry with the NUI. Following his post-doctoral studies at the Kennedy Institute for Rheumatology, London, he worked as a Research Scientist in the Clinical Diagnostics Division of Biocon Biochemicals (Cork) before taking up a post as Lecturer in the Biochemistry Department of UCC. In 1990 he moved to Shriners Hospital for Children, Tampa, FL, where he worked as a Senior Research Scientist and Senior Research Fellow. This was followed by a two year Professorial appointment in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of South Florida College of Medicine, Tampa, FL. In 1994 Dr. Barry joined Osiris Therapeutics Inc., Baltimore, MD, where he has managed multidisciplinary R&D and Biotech-Pharma collaborative programmes in the Biomatrix Development Division (Senior Research Scientist), the Cartilage Research and Analytical Biochemistry Division (Associate Director) and the Arthritis Research Division (Director). As part of his portfolio of management activities he has directed patent preparation and submission, targeted product development and GLP investigations at both pre-clinical and phase 1 clinical level which have included animal model development, GLP safety and efficacy studies, and regulatory submissions. His divisional staff include engineers, materials scientists, biochemists, cell biologists and analytical chemists. Their research activities encompass osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, tissue engineering, biomaterials testing, animal models, cartilage repair, chondrocyte biology, stem cell differentiation, cartilage matrix biochemistry, protein isolation and characterization, mass spectrometry and proteomics. |
