Biography:

Research Interests:
- application of algae (seaweeds and microalgae) in biotechnology and environmental research (e.g. climate change, environmental impact assessment, water quality)
- sustainable utilisation of algal (e.g. seaweed) resources
- impacts of environmental variability in algal biochemical (e.g. bioactive) composition and feedback mechanisms
- targeted cultivation of algae for optimised production of biomass and metabolites with commercial value or potential

Dr Dagmar Stengel is a lecturer in marine plant science and Leader of the Algal Biosciences Research Theme at NUI Galway which focuses on advancing fundamental and applied aspects of the biology, ecology and biotechnology of both macroalgae (seaweeds) and microalgae. A major emphasis of her research is the development of innovative and sustainable systems for harnessing of algae for provision of useful products and services for humanity whilst ensuring sustainable utilisation of natural resources. Current research projects include aspects of commercial utilisation of algae and the role of algae in marine ecosystem functioning and climate change research.

In addition to being a PI and researcher at the Ryan Institute, she recently served as Vice Dean for Teaching and Learning in the College of Science and Streamleader for Environment and Biotechnology within the School of Natural Sciences at NUI Galway. She completed an MA in Academic Practice in 2009, was awarded the NUI Galway President’s Teaching Award in 2009 and a national award by the National Academy for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (NAIRTL) in 2010.

Research Interests

Algal biology, ecology and biotechnology. Research interests focuses on ecological and metabolic responses of algae (seaweeds and microalgae) to their environment (including effects of climate change and anthropogenic influences such as harvesting regimes and deterioration of water quality), the targeted cultivation of macro- and microalgae for optimised production of seaweed and algal biomass, and primary and secondary metabolites with industrial potential.
