Biography:
| I am a microbiologist with 8 years experience in environmental microbiology and biotechnology. I have developed a strong national and international research profile (>100 scientific communications, consisting of 1 book chapter; >30 peer-reviewed research papers; 1 review paper; >70 conference proceedings). Since my first appointment, I have assisted (in a postdoctoral capacity) with 36 undergraduate, 4 M.Sc. (including one M.Sc. co-supervised by the University of Lódz, Poland) and 10 Ph.D. theses at NUI, Galway. I was awarded my first research grant as PI in 2006 from SFI, for which I now supervise a PhD student and a postdoctoral researcher at NUIG. That research is focused on in situ microbial ecophysiology using microautoradiography and fluorescent in situ hybridization (MAR-FISH) and microimaging of radiolabel uptake of biomass from cold, sewage-degrading bioreactors, and the collaborators are Prof. T. Curtis (Newcastle, UK) and Dr. Piet Lens (Wageningen, The Netherlands). I joined the MPIMM in January 2007, where I now co-supervise 1 Ph.D. project. My research in Bremen was focused on the role of aerobic and anaerobic microbial processes in the N-cycle in estuarine and intertidal sediments of the River Weser, the Wadden/North Sea and the Arabian Sea (Pakistani accretionary wedge). During my MPIMM fellowship, I have trained in the application of microsensors, for in situ rate measurements, as well as membrane inlet mass spectrometry (MIMS), isotope pairing ratio techniques, inorganic analytical chemistry and catalyzed reporter deposition-FISH (CARD-FISH). I started a fixed-term lectureship at the Department of Microbiology, NUI Galway, in September 2007. |
