Biography:

Dr. Robin Raine has been researching marine  Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in Irish waters for over 20 years.   these blloms cause enormous economic hardship to the shellfish production industry.  He has developed hypotheses and models for the onset of toxic dinoflagellate blooms around the Irish coastline, particularly for the important aquaculture production areas of  southwest Ireland and Cork Harbour.  Between 2003 and 2010  he has been involved in GEOHAB (Global Ecology and Oceanography of Harmful Algal Blooms, the SCOR-IOC-UNESCO project on harmful algae), being nominated onto the GEOHAB Scientific Steering Committee in 2003 and becoming its chairman in 2006.

This work has developed from an over-riding interest in the relationship between phytoplankton dynamics and physical oceanography in waters overlying the continental shelf.
