Biography:

Kate Kenny is a Lecturer in Political Science and Sociology at NUI Galway and a member of the Work, Society and Governance research cluster and Gender ARC. She is a Research Fellow at Cambridge University’s Judge Business School, and held an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellowship there from 2007-08.

Her research interests centre on issues of culture and identity in relation to work organizations. Projects include a study of construction sector organizations and a year-long ethnographic study at a non-profit aid organization (funded by ESRC among others).  She is currently researching banking and finance organizations in relation to these topics (funded by NUI Galway’s Millennium Fund).

Her work has been published in Human Relations, Organization, Health and Place, Organization Studies (forthcoming 2012), Journal of Organizational Change Management, Culture and Organization and Gender Work and Organization.  She is an editorial board member of the Journal of Organizational Ethnography and ephemera: Theory and Politics in Organizations.  She recently co-authored a book on Identity and Organizations with Professors Andrea Whittle and Hugh Willmott (Sage, 2011).

Research Interests

I research culture and identity in work and organizations.  Over the last ten years, I have studied construction sector work, and non-profit organizations in international development.  I am currently researching banking and finance organizations in relation to these topics.

I am interested in qualitative methodologies including ethnography. Theoretically, I have written on the contribution of psychoanalysis, feminism and poststructuralism to the understanding of workplace identity and culture.

I welcome working with PhD students in any of these areas, and on related ideas.
