Biography:
Liam Coen (BA, M.Litt) began working with the Child and Family Research Centre in 2006 and formally joined from the School of Political Science and Sociology in July 2007. Previously, Liam taught public and social policy at the National University of Ireland, Galway and the University of Limerick. Past research interests have included the Irish administrative system with specific reference to the reform of local government and the transition to local governance; and the governance of the Irish health system. Liam's current research interests include the application of public administration and public policy concepts and their implications on debates about governance. Specific pieces of work include: co-production as a method of user participation; outcomes and indicators as planning tools for policy makers and service deliverers; and the activation of welfare payment recepients in austere economic times. He has peer-reviewed international journal articles in each of these areas. His PhD research explores the concept of the street-level bureaucrat and activities undertaken by these actors when working in a policy area which is ambiguous. The specific policy area is parent support in Ireland. |
Research Interests
| Liam's current research interests include the application of public administration and public policy concepts and their implications on debates about governance. Specific pieces of work include: co-production as a method of user participation; outcomes and indicators as planning tools for policy makers and service deliverers; and the activation of welfare payment recepients in harsh economic times. He has peer-reviewed international journal articles in each of these areas. He is currently participating in research on: the process of implementing a comprehensive community initiative in a disadvantaged area of Dublin; the pilot implementation of a family preservation model in the west of Ireland; and the training of practitioners who work with BME/Immigrant parents across the Island of Ireland. Teaching Interests
| Liam's teaching mainly centres on contributing to two of the School's Masters programmes: the Masters in Community Development, to which he contributes a module on Governance and Irish Local Government; and the Masters in Life Course Studies, to which he provides inputs on social policy and comparative family support. He also provides module inputs on the undergraduate degree programmes BA (BA1) and Public and Social Policy (BA6) as part of the teaching contributions of the School of Political Science and Sociology |
