Biography:

BA Anthropology and Geography (First Class) University College London, UK
PhD Sociology and Social Policy, Queen's University Belfast, UK

Research Interests

Key words: Human rights and development, Globalization, International Development theory and practice, Development Alternatives, Political Economy, ecology, feminism, colonialism, imperialism, postcolonial theory, development education, progressive education.

My research and teaching promote knowledge and enquiry concerning different meanings of globalization and development and the contestation of those meanings along North/South lines. It addresses the challenge of development after ‘post-development’. My research and course material engages with development theory and political economy of development, with an emphasis on alternative approaches including human development, human rights and sustainable development.

I have a strong research interest in, and commitment to public scholarship and Development Education. From 2005-2009, I was the Project Leader of the Development Education and Research Network, which worked to sustainably mainstream development education in higher education through professional disciplines such as nursing, medicine, engineering, and human rights. As Vice-Dean for Internationalization in the College of Arts, Social Sciences & Celtic Studies, I seek to advance research-informed ethical internationalization and engagement with international development and human rights in the best interests of the College’s academic work.

I am a strongly inter-and trans-disciplinary scholar, with a particular interest in bridging the fields of human rights, development, and education. I address issues of active citizenship, cultural difference, decolonization, ecology, democratization of knowledge and advocacy and activism, supporting humanistic and ecological development alternatives. I work collaboratively through the Centre for Environment, Development and Sustainability (CEDS) which brings the Sustainable Development and Governance Research Cluster in the School of Political Science and Sociology, together with researchers in Geography, Economics, and other Humanities disciplines.

I am a reflective teacher committed to high quality, progressive third and fourth level teaching. I work to advance public scholarship and public education. My teaching and research are strongly integrated and all taught courses are research-informed or research-based, aiming to share my own research interests and findings as well as to train students as future researchers and contributors to knowledge. I regularly provide development education,  human rights and sustainability education to NGOs, student groups and the general public; as well as contributing to research programmes in other universities and in other disciplines in NUIG such as Nursing and Engineering
