Biography:

Molly Byrne obtained an honours degree in Psychology from Trinity College Dublin (1994) and both a Masters degree in Health Psychology (1998) and a PhD (2003) from NUI, Galway. Molly joined the School of Psychology in NUI, Galway in July 2004, as lecturer with responsibility for managing the teaching and research interface between the School of Psychology and the Departments or Speech and Language Therapy and Occupational Therapy. She is currently Director of the MSc in Health Psychology. http://www.nuigalway.ie/psy/mhp1.html and Co-Director of the Structured PhD programme in Psychology and health.

 

Molly Byrne has nearly 15 years’ experience of conducting research in, and teaching, Health Psychology. Molly has played a leading role in establishing a Health Psychology community in Ireland, e.g. she was a committee member of the first Psychological Society of Ireland Division of Health Psychology and Chaired their first scientific conference in 2004. She maintains strong links with an international Health Psychology community (she is currently the National Delegate for Ireland in the European Health Psychology Society and is a member of the Editorial Scholar Panel for the British Journal of Health Psychology). All her research involves multidisciplinary collaboration, and she has worked with medics, allied health professionals, economists, nurses, and statisticians. She has published over 30 peer reviewed publications and regularly presents at national and international conferences. She has reviewed manuscripts for BioMed Central, British Journal of Health Psychology, Irish Journal of Psychological Medicine, Irish Journal of Psychology, Implementation Science and Depression and Anxiety.

Her research interests are in the following areas:

 

·         The application of psychological theory to developing and evaluating health behaviour change interventions.

·         Chronic disease (particularly coronary heart disease and diabetes): self-management, sexuality and psychosocial aspects.


She teaches courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level in Health Psychology (PS159, PS151, PS577) and Research Methods (PS160, OY307). She supervises students at PhD, MSc and undergraduate level.

 

Molly Byrne is currently on sabbatical leave (January 2012 - January 2013).
