Biography

Dr Cornelia Connolly is a Lecturer at the School of Education at NUI Galway. Her research has three interweaving threads in educational design, educational technology, and computer science education.
Cornelia is a Fellow of the International Society for Design and Development in Education (ISDDE), a member of Lero, the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Research Centre for Software; and a Senior Researcher with the UNESCO Child & Family Research Centre.

Cornelia's teaching and research interests centre principally on STEM teacher education, with a particular emphasis on the technology (T) aspect of STEM, curriculum and computational thinking.
Dr. Connolly was awarded a 2021 Lero Directors Prize for Research, and a 2020 Deans Award in recognition for her leadership at international, national and University level regarding Computer Science Education. She is a member of the Department of Education and Skills, Initial Teacher Education Digital Strategy working group, Framework for Computer Science and the NCCA Development Group for Computer Science

Research:
Dr. Connolly is Chair of the Research Committee at the School of Education, College of Arts Social Science and Celtic Studies.
Cornelia is PI on a the Rethink Ireland project Bridging Worlds - Learning Spaces for New Times" a collaboration with the UNESCO Centre, ILAS, NUIG Access, Insight and Foróige; a most timely project to connect and continue young peoples educational experience across formal and non-formal contexts.
Dr. Connolly is Co-PI for the EU Erasmus+ DEIMP Project: Designing & Evaluating Innovative Mobile Pedagogies (2017-2020); and T-REX (2019-2022) funded by Ireland's Teaching Council, National Council for Curriculum and Assessment, Centre for Effective Services, and National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning and EU Erasmus+ BRIST, Building Research Infrastructures for School Teachers (2019-2022.)
Cornelis was chair of the CSforALL Ireland Summit the inaugural Irish summit on Computer Science education and co-chair of the ISDDE 2018 conference hosted at NUI Galway

Before joining NUI Galway Dr Connolly taught computer science and mathematics at third level and worked with Accenture in IT and management consulting prior to that. Cornelia was also the co-founder and operations lead for a University spin-out company and national web platform to support roll-out of a high-profile nationwide educational initiative for the Higher Educational Authority (HEA) involving over 40 third level educational providers.

Teaching:
Dr. Connolly was Programme Director (Education) for the BA Mathematics and Education programme, the concurrent specialist Mathematics and Applied Mathematics teacher education degree; the founding Programme Director (Education) of the BA Education (Computer Science and Mathematical Studies) programme and she teaches on both programmes.
