Biography

David lectures in NUI Galway and Bangor University (Wales). He specialises in environmental foot-printing and techno-economic assessment of food, bioproduct and waste management systems, and has 15 years of experience in life cycle assessment (LCA) at Trinity College Dublin, the Environmental Protection Agency, the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (Seville), Bangor University and NUI Galway. He is PI or Co-I across eleven projects, including PI on the EPA-funded SeQUEsTER project assessing pathways towards carbon neutrality for Ireland’s agriculture and land use sector and LCA lead on the H2020 TRUE project evaluating plant proteins. His role in these projects is the undertaking or supervision of advanced LCA to assess the environmental sustainability of: livestock intensification transitions (in the UK, Ireland, Costa Rica and Colombia); innovative food and drink products derived from leguminous crops; multifunctional forestry value chains; bioplastics and bioenergy coversion pathways; heat recovery systems. David has expertise in environmental assessment of livestock systems, and is a contributor to international courses on livestock and climate change delivered by the IAMZ. He is member of the UN task force developing life cycle impact indicators for water and air pollution.
