Biography:

Dr Pat Eaton graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1975 with  a BA in Psychology. She obtained a teaching qualification from the University of Southampton followed by teaching experience before returning to the University of Southampton to gain an MSc in Educational Psychology. She worked as an Educational Psychologist for Derbyshire and Staffordshire local education authorities before obtaining a post as Lecturer in the School of Education at the University of Leicester where she was instrumental in developing new in-service programmes in special educational needs for practising teachers.

Following her move to Ireland in 1988 she worked as a Psychologist for the Community Care service of the Western Health Board before obtaining a lecturing post in the then Department of Education at NUIG. In 1995 she set up the first in-service Diploma programme for teachers of children with learning difficulties in the West of Ireland, a programme that was subsequently supported by the government Department of Education. In the 1990s also she was a member of a small group of PSI members who contributed to the setting up of the PSI Diploma in Educational Psychology - at the time only professional qualification for Educational Psychologists available in the State. She served on the Diploma Management Committee and acted as a mentor for students undertaking this Diploma.

In 2008 she completed her PhD - a case study investigation of a sample of second level schools and their responses to the increase in inclusion of young people with special educational needs. In 2008-2010 she took over the role of Interim Head of the newly formed School of Education.
