Biography

Barry Hayes is a Lecturer and Researcher in Electrical & Electronic Engineering in the College of Engineering and Informatics.

Before joining NUI Galway in September 2016, Barry was a Marie Sklodowska-Curie research fellow at the IMDEA Energy Institute, Madrid, Spain, where he contributed to European and national research projects in the area of power systems and smart grids. He holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh (2013), and was a visiting researcher at National Grid UK (2011) and at the CURENT Institute for Future Energy Networks, University of Tennessee (2016). He also worked in industry as an engineer at Intel from 2005-2009.

Barry has been awarded a number of
significant research grants and individual fellowships, including a European Commission Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship, a UK EPSRC PhD Scholarship, and the Jose Castillejo and Juan de la Cierva awards from the Spanish national research council.

He is an IEEE Senior Member with more than 30 peer-reviewed publications in books, international conferences and journals. He has presented his work at a range of international industry and academic events, including invited presentations in Japan (Research Institute for Advanced Network Technology, Waseda University, Tokyo, 2016) and in the USA (IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting, 2015).

Research Interests

Barry's research interests are in intelligent monitoring and control systems applied to various problems in electrical and electronic engineering, including:

(i) demand side management and network integration of energy storage technologies.
(ii) state estimation in electricity distribution networks.
(iii) electrical load forecasting techniques.
(iv) microgrid energy management systems.
(v) non-intrusive load monitoring.
