Biography

Miriam is Associate Professor in Drama and Theatre Studies, joining the University of Galway in 2014. She is currently serving as President of the Irish Society for Theatre Research (ISTR) from May 2023-May 2027. Her research interests include twentieth and twenty-first century theatre and performance, production and performance economics, the politics of performance, feminisms, and trauma and memory studies. Miriam's first monograph Staging Trauma: Bodies in Shadow (2018) was nominated for the TaPRA Early-Career Research Award 2019 and critically acclaimed in reviews by Modern Drama, Times Higher EducationIrish Literary Supplement, Irish University Review, New Theatre Quarterly, Studies in Theatre and Performance, TDR: The Drama Review, and more. Miriam is currently writing a new book, The Theatre of Louise Lowe for Cambridge University Press Elements (2024), and co-editing a special issue of Performance Research with Helena Grehan 'On Invasion', (2023).

Miriam is PI of IRC Laureate award 'The Price of Performance: A Question of Economic Sustainability for Independent Theatre Production in Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland 2000-2020'. This research will occur from May 2023-October 2025, utilising mixed methods research to analyse budgets, policies, and the wider economic footprint of independent production to assess if, and how, sustainability of creative practice occurs in the face of major economic, social, environmental and political challenges locally, nationally, and globally.

Miriam worked as associate producer/researcher for 2 seasons of the documentary web-series co-produced by Up Up Up and Copper Alley, Mad, Bad, and Dangerous: a celebration of 'difficult' women programmed Dublin Fringe Festival (2020) and  Bealtaine Festival (2020, 2022), co-sponsored by the Irish Research Council New Foundations award and the University of Galway. In spring 2021, Miriam directed and produced the Tuam Oral History Theatre Production Nochtaithe with third year Drama and Theatre Studies students sponsored by Galway University Foundation, premiering in the Bealtaine Festival (2021) and Liverpool Irish Festival (2021), described as a "maddening, moving, creative work" by the Irish Times.

Miriam was guest lecturer at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), Brazil, also delivering guest lectures at the Fluminense Federal University (UFF) in Rio de Janeiro, and the University of São Paulo (USP) in 2019 sponsored by the Government of Ireland Academic Mobility Scheme. 

Recent publications include Theatre, Performance and Commemoration, co-edited with Alinne Fernandes and Pieter Verstraete, for Methuen Bloomsbury in 2023 and Legacies of the Magdalen Laundries (Manchester UP 2021) co-edited with Mary McAuliffe and Emilie Pine, a special issue of international journal Ilha do Desterro (2018) co-edited with Alinne Fernandes and Maria Rita Viana, the collection Radical Contemporary Theatre Practices by Women in Ireland (Carysfort 2015) and a special issue of the journal Irish Theatre International (2014), both co-edited with Maria Kurdi. She has also published articles in leading international peer-reviewed journals, including Performance ResearchPerformance ParadigmContemporary Theatre Review, Modern Drama ('Honourable Mention'), New Theatre Quarterly, Mortality, Irish Studies Review, Cadernos de Letras and Focus. Miriam has been awarded research funding and support from the Irish Research Council, Enterprise Ireland, Government of Ireland, the University of Galway, the International Federation for Theatre Research (IFTR), the Irish Society for Theatre Research (ISTR), The Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies at Notre Dame, and UCD. She has worked in theatre, television and film in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and as a television journalist specializing in the Middle East and North Africa. She maintains a strong interest in the business of theatre production and the creative arts, drawing from her postdoctoral research project, the Creative Exchange Northern Ireland (CXNI), an AHRC creative knowledge exchange initiative led by the University of Ulster with Queen's University Belfast (2013-14). 

Miriam currently supervises doctoral projects investigating contemporary performance practices and female histories of trauma, funded by the Irish Research Council. She welcomes thesis proposals in any areas relating to theatre and performance studies, particularly regarding its interdisciplinary relationships with identity politics, trauma and memory studies, theatre production, feminisms, and the creative industries.

My specialisms include twenty and twenty-first century theatre and performance, feminist performance, theatre and politics, production ecologies and behind the scenes, theatre and space, trauma and memory studies, and the creative and cultural industries.

My classes are research-led with theory imbricated with practice and vice versa.
