Research Interests

My research interests include Irish traditional music practices as they relate to transmission, performance, commemoration, constructions of authenticity, place, festival, culture economy, gender, national identity and emigration

My PhD thesis ‘Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy: Transmission, Performance and Commemoration of Irish Traditional Music, 1973-2012’ locates the emergence of the School in 1973 as a transformative revivalist moment in the history of Irish traditional music. An engagement with this site of practice problematises concepts such as re-traditionalisation, surrogation and authenticity as well as highlighting the specific micro-site elements that prefigured the capacity for the School and its culture economy.

Recent articles interrogate concepts of place, retraditionalisation and commemoration within the Irish music tradition.
