Biography

I took my BA (English & History) at NUI Galway in 1992 and was awarded my Ph.D. by the NUI in 2002 for a study of the works of John Banville. I lectured in English at NUI Galway from 2002-4 and 2006-9 and from 2004-6 was an IRCHSS Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University's Moore Institute. In 2009 I became the University's John McGahern Lecturer in Creative Writing. I am author of John Banville (2009), editor of The John McGahern Yearbook (4 vols. 2008-11), have published essays in the areas of contemporary Irish fiction and culture and the history and practice of literary reviewing, and was a main reviewer of new Irish fiction for The Irish Times from 1999 to 2010. I was Academic Director of The International John McGahern Seminar, held in Leitrim from 2007-2013. I also write and publish fiction and am working towards a collection of short stories. I was the founding director of the BA with Creative Writing and formerly director of the MA in Journalism and BA with Journalism at NUI Galway, and I am presently director of the MA in Writing.

My special interests are creative writing and practice, and twentieth-century literature and culture, with special period emphasis on the contemporary period (post-1950s) and special national interest in Irish fiction. I have specific author interests in John Banville, John McGahern and Patrick McCabe.
