Biography

Dr Newell is the Head of the Biostatistics Unit of the HRB Clinical Research Facility, NUI Galway, an affiliated member of the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Mathematics, NUI Galway and an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Canterbury,  New Zealand.  I am a member of the NUI Galway Bioinformatics and Biostatistics Research Cluster, a group of researchers and students interested in the development and application of statistical and computational methods to clinical and molecular biological data.

My primary areas of research in Biostatistics are in the theory and application of statistical methods in clinical trials of health service and population health interventions and in the development of novel analytic approaches in Sports and Exercise Science.  My research interests include statistical modelling, statistical computing, design and analysis of cluster randomised trials, smoothing techniques and derivative estimation, survival analysis, tree based classification problems and sports analytics.

I am the co-director of the Masters in Clinical Research and director of the Masters in Biostatistics in NUI Galway and founder of the annual Summer School in Biostatistics in NUI Galway.

Research Interests

Biostatistics is unique in that it is a key component to all clinical research areas, but especially in population health and health services research, and involves collaboration with researchers in numerous disciplines (e.g. clinical research, health economics, clinical psychology).

My primary areas of research in Biostatistics are i) in the theory and application of statistical methods in clinical trials of health service interventions, ii) the design and analysis of observational studies in population health, iii) in translational statistics and iv) applications of statistics in sports and exercise science.

My research interests include statistical modelling, statistical computing, design and analysis of cluster randomised trials, smoothing techniques and derivative estimation, survival analysis involving dependent observations, tree based classification problems and sports analytics.
