My teaching philosophy is quite simple; it is based on the maxim De omnibus dubitandum which we were taught years ago in Germany i.e. doubt everything and believe nothing! I teach my postgraduate students to question everything that they are told (by myself included) and to always attempt to ascertain the true source of what passes as ‘fact’ in Ireland, both past and present. At postgraduate level, we always try to begin ad fontes and to formulate our theories and assumptions after the proper appraisal of the extant (and putative) sources. As for my undergraduates, I usually try to teach them according to the principle that I can only facilitate their learning and that I cannot learn it for them. I usually teach in an informal manner by arranging the seating so as to be inclusive, and by letting the students now that I myself was also once a student who “knew nothing”!
I began my teaching career nearly twenty years ago at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität in Freiburg, Germany. Since then, I have spent most of my professional career in Germany and in Ireland. I have taught Celtic Studies and Irish language and literature through the medium of Irish, German and English from ab initio students to native speakers.
I have always viewed teaching as being a form of communication. Experience has taught me that without a rapport and a connection between the teacher and the class, on both an individual and collective level, there can be no successful learning. I like to begin my courses (language or literature) with a few ruminative and pivotal questions. These serve to indicate to the students from the outset that their opinion and active collaboration is valued and equally that they will not be treated as mere passive attendees in the classroom. Questions also serve to suggest to the students that I do not and cannot have all the answers and that their engagement with the subject is respected and expected. This approach leads to more reflective and active engagement by the students.
