Biography

Jane Conroy is from the Gaeltacht area of Rosmuc, Co. Galway. Schooled in Rosmuc, in Galway and in France, she studied for her BA and MA in the National University of Ireland, Galway, and for her doctorate in the Université de Paris-IV (Sorbonne).

She worked initially in the CREDIF centre in Royan, Charente-Maritime, then in the Université de Lille, France, before returning to take up a position in the French Department of NUI Galway. She served as a member of the Governing Authority for 12 years.

She was awarded a Government of Ireland Senior Research Fellowship in 2001-02. She won PRTLI funding in cycles 2 and 5, as joint PI for projects on Intercultural studies and Cultural transfer, and, as member of a team, for the creation of an Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Research Building (AHSSRB) in NUI Galway. She served as the AHSSRB's first Academic Director (2011-2016). As the Royal Irish Academy's Secretary for Humanities and Social Sciences, she was PI for the successful Humanities Serving Irish Society Consortium bid under PRTLI cycle 4, for which the Royal Irish Academy was the lead institution. Other sources of research funding have included the Higher Education Authority and the Andrew Mellon Foundation.

In 2005 she was awarded the Grand Prix de la Francophonie by the Académie française for her published work in French. In 2007 she was made a Chevalier de l'Ordre national du Mérite by the President of the French Republic. 

She was elected to membership of the Royal Irish Academy in 2003, has served as its Secretary for Polite Literature and Antiquities (Humanities and Social Sciences), and since 2019 is its Vice-President for Research.

Other activities in recent years include membership of Expert Reviewer panels (Culture and Cultural Production) for the European Research Council (2014-present), the Polish National Science Centre (2017-present) and the Lithuanian Research Council (2018-present). 
 
Her research interests lie mainly in the following areas:
- the cultural and literary history of Early Modern France;
- drama and dramatic production in 17th-century France;
- French and Irish cultural interaction (17th-19th century);
- travel writing and illustration;
- translation of Early Modern and Enlightenment scientific texts.
Language competence: English, French, Irish (native/near-native: C2); Italian (B1); Spanish (good reading knowledge); Turkish (Waystage, A2).

Research Interests

Published research and current interests lie mainly in the following areas:

- the cultural and literary history of Early Modern France
- drama and dramatic production in 17th-century France
- French perceptions of Ireland, 17th-18th century
- the circulation of ideas through travel
- travel writing and illustration
- translation of Early Modern and Enlightenment scientific texts
