Biography:
| Tá an Dr. John Walsh ina Léachtóir le Gaeilge i Scoil na dTeangacha, na Litríochtaí agus na gCultúr. Múineann sé an tsochtheangeolaíocht ag leibhéal na bunchéime agus na hiarchéime. Ceapadh ina Leas-Déan Taighde é i gColáiste na nDán, na nEolaíochtaí Sóisialta agus an Léinn Cheiltigh i 2012. Tá dochtúireacht ag an Dr. Walsh ó Ollscoil Chathair Bhaile Átha Cliath faoi thionchar na Gaeilge ar fhorbairt shocheacnamaíoch na hÉireann. Roimhe sin, rinne sé céim MA sa Chaidreamh Idirnáisiúnta (Socheolaíocht, Polaitíocht, Dlí) san ollscoil chéanna. Tá céim BA sa Ghaeilge agus sa Bhreatnais aige ón gColáiste Ollscoile, Baile Átha Cliath. Roimh dó tabhairt faoin saol acadúil d’oibrigh an Dr. Walsh mar léachtóir Gaeilge in Ollscoil Chathair Bhaile Átha Cliath, leis an mBiúró Eorpach do Theangacha Neamhfhorleathana sa Bhruiséil agus mar iriseoir le Raidió Teilifís Éireann agus le TG4. Faoi láthair, tá sé i mbun taighde ar idé-eolaíocht agus spreagadh ‘nuachainteoirí’ mionteangacha, daoine nár tógadh leis na teangacha sin ach a labhraíonn iad go líofa agus go rialta. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dr. John Walsh is a Lecturer in Irish at the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures. He teaches sociolinguistics at undergraduate and postgraduate level. In 2012, he was appointed Vice-Dean for Research in the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies. Dr. Walsh’s doctorate on the influence of the Irish language on Ireland socio-economic development was awarded by Dublin City University. Before that, he completed an MA in International Relations (Sociology, Politics, Law) also at DCU. He holds a BA in Irish and Welsh from University College Dublin. Dr. Walsh previously worked as a lecturer in Irish at DCU, with the European Bureau for Lesser Used Languages in Brussels, and as a journalist with Raidió Teilifís Éireann and TG4. His current research focuses on the ideologies and motivations of ‘new speakers’ of minority languages, people who were not raised speaking those languages but who speak them fluently and regularly. |
