My Photograph

Biography:

My research interests are centred on traditions of scholarship and education in Antiquity and the early Middle Ages. I work especially on early linguistic thought and the study of Latin, Greek and Hebrew as foreign languages.

After studying Classics at UCC (1995), I worked in electronic publishing and then in website design and project management before returning to postgraduate study. My PhD (NUIG, 2007) followed an interest in the continuity of the Classical tradition in Ireland, and I explored the evidence of early Irish glossaries for the study of Latin, Greek and Hebrew in Ireland from the seventh to tenth centuries AD.

I subsequently worked on the Early Irish Glossaries Project in Cambridge, and then returned to NUIG to work on the Irish reception of the sixth-century Latin grammarian Priscian (seewww.stgallpriscian.ie). In 2012 I was appointed to a lectureship in Classics at NUIG.

I am interested in all aspects of philology, including historical linguistics, manuscript studies and textual criticism. I have also applied my IT experience to producing digital editions and exploiting digital humanities more broadly.
