Research Interests

Education and scholarship in Antiquity and the early Middle Ages, especially language teaching, early linguistic thought, glosses and glossaries, Hiberno-Latin.

Specific topics:
❧ Ancient education, especially grammar and rhetoric.
❧ Transmission of learning in glosses, glossaries and scholia (Latin, Greek, Old Irish).
❧ Knowledge of Greek and Hebrew in the early medieval West.
❧ Digital humanities and digital editing.
❧ Comparative history of European and East Asian literary traditions.

I am happy to work with PhD students on any of these topics, and to provide advice on funding and other practicalities. Currently supervising PhD projects on the reception of pre-Socratic philosophy in Late Antiquity, on digital representations of intertextuality in Late Antique epic, and on the ideology of Sedulius Scotus' De Rectoribus Christianis. I have supervised MA theses on the Hiberno-Latin text De Mirabilibus Sacrae Scripturae, on Paul's Letter to the Galatians, and on the Roman foundation myth.

Teaching Interests

I teach Latin and Greek to undergrads and postgrads from beginners' level to advanced.

I also teach undergraduate courses on Roman literature (esp. Virgil, Horace, Persius, Juvenal), ancient rhetoric, and Late Antique cultural history. I have previously taught on Classical Greek history, ancient writing and literacy, Romance linguistics, Celtic mythology, and early Irish literature.

My MA seminars are generally themed around literacy, education and rhetoric in Antiquity and the early Middle Ages.
