Biography:

Dr. Karen da Costa is a Brazilian lawyer with a Ph.D. (2011) in International Studies (Specialisation in International Law) from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, University of Geneva. She also holds a European Masters (2003) in International Humanitarian Assistance, Network on Humanitarian Assistance (NOHA) from the Ruhr-University of Bochum and an L.LM. (2002) in German Law from the Ludwig-Maximilans University (Munich).

She is currently University Fellow (Teaching & Research) in Human Rights at the Irish Centre for Human Rights, and Honorary Research Fellow at the Department of Social Sciences of the University of Roehampton (London). Her previous work experience includes positions as Visiting Lecturer at the University of Roehampton, Legal Consultant for the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Human Rights Officer at the United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire, and Legal Officer at the Brazilian Federal Prosecutorial Office. Her book ’The Extraterritorial Application of Selected Human Rights Treaties’ has been recently published by Brill/Martinus Nijhoff Publishers/Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies Series.

Research Interests

My research interests relate to contemporary international human rights law issues, including the impact of natural disasters on the enjoyment of human rights by the affected population.
