Biography

Biography

Dr Lucy-Ann Buckley has lectured in Law at NUI Galway since 1999, having previously lectured at the University of Warwick and the University of Limerick. She holds a law degree and LLM by research from University College Cork, a BCL (taught masters) from the University of Oxford, and a PhD from Trinitiy College Dublin. She is also a qualified solicitor. In 2012, she was a visiting scholar at the University of Warwick.

Research

Lucy has published widely on family law, family property, labour law and equality issues (particularly gender equality), and has a special interest in socio-legal work. Her masters thesis was on the law of sexual harassment, while her PhD
focused on the issue of financial provision on marital breakdown in Ireland. Her current research focuses on gender equality issues in legal approaches to autonomy, particularly in the family context, and on gender and disability equality issues in employment. She is especially interested in the legal recognition of caring work and contributions to family life, and in the effects of caring roles on employment participation and gender equality. She is also keenly interested in the legal status of prenuptial and other family agreements, and in constitutional aspects of family law.

Lucy is an affiliate of the Centre for Disability Law and Policy at NUI Galway. She is a project leader of Gender ARC and a member of the Gender and Public Policy Cluster at the Whitaker Institute. She is also a member of the Irish Feminist Judgments Project, a multi-disciplinary project based in the Universities of Durham and Kent and the London School of Economics. This project builds on the Feminist Judgments Project by rewriting key Irish legal judgments from a feminist perspective.

Teaching

Lucy currently teaches Labour Law and Equity to undergraduate and LLB students. She also teaches Equality Law and co-teaches Irish Disability Law and Policy, both at Masters level. She has previously taught a wide range of other subjects, including Comparative Property Law,
Sociology of Law, Land Law, Women and the Law, and Law and Social Policy.

Administration

Lucy is currently the Associate Head of Teaching and Learning in the School of Law, and the Vice Dean for Teaching and Learning in the College of Business, Public Policy and Law. Previous roles include
Programme Director of the LLM in International and Comparative Disability Law and Policy, and Programme Director of the BA in Public and Social Policy. Lucy also played a key role in establishing the Diploma in Irish for Lawyers, in association with Oifig na Gaeilge Labhartha at NUI Galway.
