Biography

Dr Lucy-Ann Buckley is the Vice Dean for Teaching and Learning in the College of Business, Public Policy and Law. She is also the Associate Head of Teaching and Learning in the School of Law, where she lectures in Equality Law, Labour Law and Equity.

Dr Buckley specialises in equality law and policy, particularly in relation to gender and disability, and in family property. Her masters research thesis, for which she was awarded first class honours, was on the law of sexual harassment, while her doctoral research examined financial provision on marital breakdown in Ireland. She has published widely in leading national and international journals regarding equality issues in family and employment law. She is also active in international policy development, contributing to the draft Joint Statement Towards Inclusive Social Protection Systems Supporting the Full and Effective Participation of Persons With Disabilities prepared by the International Labour Organisation in 2015-2016. Most recently, in 2018, she acted as an expert advisor to the States of Guernsey in relation to the development of disability equality legislation.

Dr Buckley joined the Law School at NUI Galway in 1999, having previously held positions with the University of Warwick, the University of Limerick and Keele University. In 2012, she was a visiting scholar at the University of Warwick. She holds a BCL and LLM by research from University College Cork, a BCL (taught masters) from the University of Oxford, and a PhD from Trinity College Dublin. She is also a qualified solicitor.

Research Interests

Dr Buckley’s primary research focus to date has been on the intersections between labour, gender equality and family law. She has a particular interest in socio-legal and qualitative work. Her publications can be divided into two categories (labour law and family property), but are united by an underlying focus on gender equality which contributes to wider societal debates and narratives. In recent years, Dr Buckley’s interest in family and gender equality has led her to focus on personal autonomy in the family agreement context, with particular reference to the effects of social and labour market pressures. She has also increasingly focused on disability equality, and forthcoming work addresses the intersections between gender and disability in employment law.

Dr Buckley has published in a range of leading international peer-reviewed journals, including Legal Studies, the Canadian Journal of Family Law, the Northern Ireland Legal Quarterly, the International Journal of Law, Policy and the Family, and the Industrial Law Journal. She has also published in leading national law journals, such as the Irish Jurist and the Dublin University Law Journal.

Dr Buckley is an affiliate of the Centre for Disability Law and Policy at NUI Galway. She is a member of of Gender ARC and of the Gender and Public Policy Cluster at the Whitaker Institute. She is also a member of the Northern/Irish Feminist Judgments Project, a multi-disciplinary project based in the University of Durham, the University of Kent and the London School of Economics.

Dr Buckley is currently supervising three funded PhD students in areas related to disability equality and labour regulation. She welcomes inquiries from potential doctoral students in relation to family law, equality law and policy (including but not limited to gender and disability issues), labour law, and equity and trusts.
