Biography

Lecturer in Business Information Systems at the J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics NUI Galway since September 2000. Director BComm 2023 - Current. Director of the Masters of Business Studies (MBA) September 2015 to present Jan 2022. Driven by an ambition to provide an MBA experience consistent with NUI Galway’s ranking as a top 1% university, during this time, Martin has lead three successful re-accreditations (Jan 2016, 2019 and 2023) with the Association for MBAs (AMBA) and drove the most innovative change in the programme since its launch in 1972 with the introduction in 2017, of an annual intake with a hybrid cyclical model structure. To best position the programme for a post COVID-19 world, Martin further innovated the programme design, in June 2020, which sees the MBA incorporate substantial blended learning while at the same time, increasing the business networking, career development and industry collaboration elements of the programme. As director, Martin has grown participant numbers on the MBA from 26 at takeover, to 38 in Sept 2019 and is on target to have at least 44 participants in Sept 2020.  From 2008 to 2014, Martin was Director of the B.Sc. Business Information Systems. At takeover, the programme had fallen to 300 points and was beset with issues around student recruitment, retention, engagement and industry standing. As director, Martin brought the programme through to 5-year EPAS accreditation with the European Foundation for Management Development; the first top-tier accreditation for the School. At handover, in 2014, the programme had EPAS accreditation, was over 400 points, all recruitment, retention and engagement issues had being dealt with, the programme had excellent industry reputation and the School had a high performing sustainable product. A passionate educator with 20 years of experience, Martin contributes across the entire spectrum of the School’s taught programmes. He has taught introductory BIS to 1st commerce for over 10 years, he delivers bespoke modules at final year undergraduate, post-graduate and on the MBA. Martin also leads the International Leadership Gateway and has designed and co-delivers the Leadership Development and Storytelling for Leaders modules on the MBA. He has created unique modules for the MBA which have emanated from his scholarly interests in lean and team empowerment. These modules are Systems for Team Empowerment and Lean Principles for Managers. Martin created the NUI Galway MBA summer school which has seen three international institutions bring their MBA students to Galway. Martin has a particularly scholarly interest in the interplay between systems, teams and empowerment. He has published two volumes of research on practice in systems for team empowerment and is currently authoring a book in this area. Martin organised and co-chaired the Galway Leadership Symposium in 2018 and delivered a leadership workshop as part of the forum activities.
