Biography

Dr Haroon Zafar completed his PhD in Biomedical Photonics from the National University of Ireland Galway, M.Sc. in Photonics and Optoelectronic Devices from the University of St Andrews and Heriot-Watt University, United Kingdom, M.Sc. in Photonics Engineering from Ghent University and the University of Brussels (VUB), Belgium and B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering.

Dr Zafar has published more than 70 papers in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences and presented his work at several top international platforms. He has received over 15 national (Irish) and international research awards/grants and was recently awarded Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) “Technology Innovation Development Award (TIDA)”, Enterprise Ireland (EI) “Innovation Partnership Programme” Grant (Co-funded by US Medtech firm Endotronix) and  Irish Research Council (IRC) “New Foundations” Grant. Dr Zafar is associated with NUI Galway since 2011. Currently, he 
is the Programme Lead for the Masters in Interventional Cardiovascular Medicine and an Investigator in the Lambe Institute for Translational Research at NUI Galway. He is also an Adjunct Lecturer at BioInnovate Ireland, a sister programme of Stanford's Biodesign Programme. In 2017, he held a position of Visiting Professor at Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada. He has previously worked at Brussels Photonics (2010-2011) and as a lecturer in Electrical Engineering (2007-2009).

His research spans the continuum from basic scientific research through to translational and clinical research which constitutes the true meaning of the phrase “bench-to-bedside” research and focuses on medical device innovation, digital health, translational optical imaging and functional imaging for regenerative medicine.

Over the last 10 years, he has attended over 25 educational, entrepreneurial and professional development courses/workshops across Europe and USA and recently attended the world-leading courses in Cardiovascular Imaging from Oxford, Erasmus University Rotterdam and University Hospital Zurich.
