Biography:
| Mary Murphy, Ph.D is a Lecturer in Regenerative Medicine and a principle investigator at the Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI), NUI Galway. Research interests focus on the biology, mechanism of action and the use of adult stem cells for tissue regeneration in orthopaedic applications. She has over 16 years experience on the isolation, characterization and differentiation of adult stem cells, articular cartilage differentiation, effects of ageing and disease on biology of stem cells, and development of pertinent animal models and therapeutic modalities for mesenchymal stem cells in tissue regeneration. Dr. Murphy has managed a large interdisciplinary group at Osiris Therapeutics Inc., for the translation of a therapeutic protocol for meniscal repair using stem cells to the first worldwide phase I clinical trial in the area including animal model development, GLP safety and efficacy studies, and submission for regulatory approval. Since moving from the US to NUIG in 2004, she has generated significant funding from Irish and European sources to establish a strong research group focusing on the role of stem cells in osteoarthritis and other orthopaedic applications. She has served as a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Frontiers Engineering and Science Directorate of Science Foundation Ireland and authored 40 peer reviewed journal articles, six reviews, two book chapters and 113 conference associated publications. In addition to academic output, Dr. Murphy has two issued patents, four further patents in review and a number of Invention Disclosures.

Research Interests
| Research interests focus on the biology, mechanism of action and the use of adult stem cells for tissue regeneration in orthopaedic applications. Current research efforts address the clonal heterogeneity of mesenchymal stem cells and the role of epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation in control of differentiation of these cells. Of particular interest is differentiation to the chondrogenic lineage and identification of novel mechanisms or molecules that may be associated with early osteoarthritis as cells in injured or diseased cartilage develop a fibrogenic phenotype. Therapeutic efforts also focus on osteoarthritis with research focused on 1) interrogating the mechanism whereby mesenchymal stem cells modulate progression of osteoarthritis and developing tissue engineering strategies to target the cells to early osteoarthritic cartilage as well as repair of focal cartilage defects. |
