Biography

Mary Murphy is Professor of Regenerative Medicine and a Principle Investigator at the Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI) at the National University of Ireland Galway. Her research interests focus on the biology of stem cells and the development of innovative medicines and tissue engineering solutions for osteoarthritis, bone repair and vascular calcification. Her basic research is focused on the concept that stem cell depletion or alteration of function contribute to the development of chronic degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis and atherosclerosis.  The use of the chondrogenic differentiation pathway of bone marrow-derived MSCs as a model to study early changes in osteoarthritis development and the role of inflammation and epigenetics in disease progression is a central platform of her research. Applied research has a focus on cell manufacturing technologies including automation, robotic processes, scalable systems and novel xeno-free and defined cell expansion media.   Mary Murphy has contributed to the fields of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine with particular impact on the development of cell therapies for osteoarthritis. Publications span basic, translational and manufacturing research in the areas of mesenchymal stromal cell biology, cartilage repair and cell therapy (>14700 citations, h-index 46 – Dec 2019).  Her contribution to research was recognised by the National University of Ireland by a Doctor of Science award in 2018.

Research Interests

Research is focused on the development of innovative medicines for osteoarthritis, bone repair and vascular calcification using mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs).  Clinical research addresses MSCs in osteoarthritis with a clinical trial due to begin shortly. Basic research focuses: (1)   The concept that stem cell depletion, or loss/alteration of function, contributes to the development of osteoarthritis and atherosclerosis, (2)   use of MSC chondrogenic differentiation to study early changes that occur in osteoarthritis development, (3)   role of inflammation and epigenetics in disease progression and (4)   host paracrine response to MSCs in the joint for identification of novel therapeutic molecules.   Tissue engineering concepts are targeted to elements required for treatment of osteoarthritis and include 1) development of novel materials for cartilage repair, 2) the use of MSCs and implant surface modification  for increased osseointegration of orthopaedic implants used in joint replacement  surgeries and 3) the development of targeting strategies and drug delivery modalities for non-invasive delivery of therapeutic cells and/or anti-inflammatory or pro-chondrogenic drugs to osteoarthritic cartilage or to joints using micro- and nano-particles.  Applied research has a focus on the economic manufacturing of MSCs for therapeutic use and address novel fully defined serum/medium for cell growth and scale-up for economic manufacture.

Teaching Interests

My teaching philosophy resides in the belief that I can work through educational activities to ensure the personal growth, well-being and development of all students I come in contact with and that through my efforts I can contribute to the development of scientist in the emerging and developing "Next-Generation" area encompassing stem cell and gene therapies as well as tissue engineering. 
In doing so I can contribute to their ability to d
evelop as individuals, secure gainful employment and income as well as fostering economic development and growth through industry. This interest is reflected in the development and participation in both Regenerative and Translational Medicine modules for post-graduate students at NUI Galway.
