Biography

Sinéad Lydon is a psychologist working in the School of Medicine at NUI Galway. Sinéad is a Lecturer in Quality and Patient Safety, teaching on the School's undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Sinéad has a passionate interest in research relating to patient safety and quality of care, developed through her work with the West Northwest Intern Training Network and the Irish Centre for Applied Patient Safety and Simulation. She is involved with a number of ongoing projects which aim to: raise standards in medical education and practice; tackle working conditions and wellbeing for quality and patient safety; improve the quality and safety of care across the healthcare system, and; engage patients in quality and safety improvement. Sinéad became the first Irish Certified Professional in Patient Safety in 2019.

Sinéad also serves as the Vice-dean for Equality, Diversity and Wellbeing for the College of Medicine, Nursing and the Health Sciences at NUI Galway. In this role, she is responsible for championing equality and diversity in the college, promoting activities and changes in practice that support staff welbeing and create a positive working environment, supporting schools to engage with the Athena SWAN charter and processes, and representing the college on university-level equality, diversity and inclusion committees. 


Sinéad holds a PhD in Psychology (funded by the Irish Research Council), an MSc in Applied Behaviour Analysis, a BA in Psychology, a Diploma in Irish, a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Academic Practice. She has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed journal articles. She is also a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Developmental and Physical Disabilities and serves as a reviewer for a number of other journals pertaining to quality and safety in healthcare, applied behaviour analysis, and medical education.
