Biography

I lecture in midwifery at the School of Nursing and Midwifery. I trained as a nurse at Ardkeen Hospital Waterford, and completed midwifery at St George's Hospital London, where I also trained in neonatal intensive care. I worked as a midwife in the UK and Ireland in maternity and neonatal intensive care clinical settings. I taught midwifery for the first time as a midwife tutor at St George's Hospital London (1988) and later (2000) at University Hospital Galway (UHG), where I also provided antenatal education to women and their partners. I began working at NUIG in 2006, when the undergraduate midwifery degree programme commenced and the Higher Diploma in Midwifery continued in partnership with UHG. Since then, my focus in education has been student midwives' learning, which includes clinical and theoretical learning. I am passionate about all aspects of midwifery, but from a research perspective I have been especially drawn to breastfeeding. I have been the co-ordinator/ programme director for the Higher Diploma in Midwifery since 2006 and third year co-ordinator for the Bachelor in Midwifery Science from 2009-2020. I teach undergraduate and postgraduate midwifery and nursing students, and qualified midwives.
