Biography

Joined NUIG (School of Physics) in 2018.
Associate Professor in Sensor & Optical Instrumentation. 
SFI funded Principal Investigator. 

Chair of School of Natural Sciences Graduate Studies Committee. 
Research on laser inscription of polymers and optical materials for sensors and devices, specifically on carbon nanomaterials, polymers and advanced functional materials. 

Current Funded Projects:
1. SFI Frontiers for the Future: Laser Functionalisation of Flexible Polymer-Carbon Composites for Medical Sensing at University of Galway. 
2. EPSRC CAFE4DM and CINDe with The University of Manchester.
3. EU Interreg AtlanticKetMed at University of Galway. 

Research: Laser induced carbon nanomaterials, for medical devices. Smart composites and surfaces for pressure and gait analysis. Distributed sensors to monitor radioactive ponds containing spent fuel cells for nuclear decommissioning. Functional materials and key enabling technologies for medical devices and biosensors. Chemical sensing, and process analytics. Optical/laser inscription & instrumentation, optical sensor systems, advanced functional materials (optical and electronic properties), and photonic materials and devices. Application of machine learning, and signal analysis to sensor signals, to extract process variables, or to identify individuals and their health conditions. Polymer optical fibre sensors. Human Motion Sensing. 
  
2002-18: Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in Sensor Instrumentation at The University of Manchester, UK: Photon Science Institute (PSI); School of Chemical Engineering & Analytical Science (CEAS); Department of Instrumentation & Analytical Science, UMIST. 
  • PhD Supervision: 25 PhD students, and ~50 MSc and MEng dissertation students.
  • Deputy Director for Postgraduate Research: progression & monitoring of 150 PhD students.
  • Teaching: Masters courses in Photon Science, Sensor Systems and Instrumentation and Analytical Science, and on undergraduate modules in Instrumentation and Control. Academic Lead for undergraduate Chemical Engineering laboratories for ~600 students.
  • Taught on Masters in Instrumentation, Analytical Science & Sensor Systems, including laser photonics, optical engineering, optical fibre technology, laser ultrasound and photoacoustics.
  • Established research in optical sensing and instrumentation, for industrial, medical and environmental applications with funding from EPSRC, EU, industry.  
1990-2002 Reader/Associate Professor in Photonics: Liverpool John Moores University, UK. 
  • Taught photonics, sensors, instrumentation to undergraduate and masters students.
  • Principal Investigator for EPSRC, EU and industrial research projects in optical fibre sensors, laser processing, water quality monitoring and environmental sensing. Supervised PhD & Masters students.

Research Interests

Optical and Photonic Instrumentation:  Optical fibre technology and photonic materials for sensors and devices, ranging from functional chemically sensitive optical coatings, to laser inscribed photonic and conducting structures in transparent materials that affect their optical and electronic properties.

Optical Materials: Advanced functional materials, and their optical, materials and chemical properties for structures and devices. Nano-electronics, materials characterisation and analytical methods.  

Medical technlogies:
Sensor instrumentation and measurement for healthcare. Strongly multidisciplinary and include photonic guided wave tomography for health care technology for monitoring older people at risk of falling, rehabilitation, gait and mobility analysis using pattern recognition and signal analysis.

Manufacturing & Process analytics: Industrial/manufacturing processes using laser and photonic technologies for sensors and devices. Key enabling technologies, including laser, additive and subtractive manufacturing.

Environmental Monitoring & Sustainable Engineering: Sensing of enviromental parameters, pH, moisture, turbidity, chemicals in soil, water for agricultural and marine applications. Recycling of polymers and plastics, microplastics separation.

Track Record
Received EPSRC funding as Principal Investigator in optical instrumentation, fibre-based sensing, chemically sensitive optical coatings and laser inscribed photonic structures.
 
Led and coordinated European Union (EU) projects funded to more than £1.75M, in biosensing and gas monitoring using optical technologies. These include include “Installation Permitting Guidance for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Stationary Applications” (HYPER), with 15 industrial partners; and “Novel Organic-Inorganic Materials in Opto-Electronic Systems for the Monitoring and Control of Bio-Processes” (MATINOES) with 6 industrial partners. 

Received industrial funding from Rolls-Royce, Unilever, National Grid, The Welding Institute and Yorkshire Water for industrial sensing. A KTP that developed wearable POF sensors for real time sweat monitoring was sponsored by Unilever via the Unilever Manchester Advanced Measurement Partnership and DTI Knowledge Transfer Partnership, resulting in a patent for functional polymer optical coatings.

Current collaboration at The University of Manchester includes EPSRC Prosperity Partnership: EP/R00482X/1; 2017-2022 for a Centre in Advanced Fluid Engineering for Digital Manufacturing (CAFE4DM); ~£6.3M with matched funding from UoM (£757K) and Unilever (£2.4M) and in-kind support from Process Systems Enterprise Ltd (£305K) and Unilever (£500K).

Optical instrumentation, and optical materials. Including photonics, optics, lasers, optical fibre technology.
Laser processing of optical materials.  
Sensors & sensor systems, including distributed sensors, signal processing, artifical intelligence and tomography. 
Medical technologies, including wearable sensors, non-invasive ambient sensors.
Chemical sensing, analytical science and process analytics.
Analogue electronics, instrumentation, signal processing and control engineering. 

I developed new degree programmes in Instrumentation, Applied Physics, Optical Science and Engineering from first year level to MSc. 

As Academic Lead for First Year and Second Year Chemical Engineering Laboratory Projects for up to 600 students, I managed a team of Graduate Teaching Assistants and Academic Staff, and designed and evaluated new methods to teach and assess laboratory and practical skills. 
I obtained Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, indicating organisation, leadership and/or management of teaching and learning provision at Descriptor 3 (D3) of the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) for teaching and supporting learning in higher education. In 2001 I obtained  ·        Membership of the Institute of Learning and Teaching by prior experience.
