Biography

Patrick has extensive work experience in a variety of educational and industrial sectors in national and international contexts. He worked with Secours Catholique social agency in Paris for several months and studied for three years in Italy during the 1970s. During the 1980s and 90s, he taught French, English, Civics and RE in the Abbey Vocational School, Donegal, for approximately thirteen years. in addition, he taught English in a post-primary school in France, EFL in Santiago Di Compostella, Spain, and Boston, MA. From 1985-87 he taught in Libya and then developed English language course material and taught for Saudi Telecom in conjunction with Bell Canada in Riyadh for a year (1988-89). He taught professional development courses for Saudi ARAMCO in Jeddah for three years (1995-98). In addition, he taught English in the United Arab Emirates University for one year (1998-99).

Patrick has lectured in the School of Education at NUIG since 1999. During his time at NUIG, he has been involved in bringing about change and improvement in teacher education from H.Dip in Ed. through PDE to the current PME. He has made significant contributions to education at Diploma, DIO, PME, M.Ed., M.Litt. and Ph.D. levels. He has lectured and/or given workshops in many areas that reflect his research interests: TEFL, modern languages, critical reflective practice, research methodologies, including action research, practitioner inquiry, active and autonomous language teaching and learning approaches, History, and Structure of Education, and Irish educational policy. He has supervised hundreds of student-teachers in the context of their teaching practice all over Ireland. In addition, he has had two years experience as Director of M.Ed. programme (2013-14, and 2015-16).
Patrick was awarded BA from NUIM, BD from Gregorian university, Rome, Diploma from Guildhall School, London, M.Ed from Manchester University, and Ph.D. from TCD.    
 

Research Interests

Language teacher education (modern languages, English,including EAL, Chinese), bilingualism, plurilingualism, interculturalism, Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and European Language Portfolio (ELP); language policy, practitioner inquiry, autonomous language teaching and learning, curriculum reform, assessment for learning/AfL, history and structure of education, educational policies, and contemporary educational issues.
