Biography

Paul Michael Garrett works at the National University of Ireland, in Galway, in the Republic of Ireland. His thematic interests include: critical social theory and social work; discourses of marginality relating to ‘troublesome’ children and families; neoliberal-inspired ‘reform’. He is the author of three books which map facets of social work with children and families during the period of New Labour (1997-2010): Remaking Social Work with Children and Families (Routledge, 2003); Social Work with Irish Children and Families in Britain (Policy Press, 2004); 'Transforming' Children’s Services? Social Work, Neoliberalism and the ‘Modern’ World (Open University/McGraw Hill, 2009). He also wrote the main essay in the recent Critical and Radical Debates in Social Work: Children and Families (Policy Press, 2014). His Social Work and Social Theory (Policy Press, 2013) is due to published, in Chinese translation, in 2016. Paul’s interventions, in a range of debates on social work’s evolution, have appeared in academic journals across a range of disciplines. For several years he has been a member of the editorial collective of Critical Social Policy, where he edits the book reviews section of the journal, and he is one of the founders of the Social Work Action Network (SWAN) Ireland.
