Biography

Jane Walsh obtained an honours degree in Psychology and  a PhD (1995) from NUI, Galway, after which she worked as a Research Psychologist in the Educational Research Centre, Dublin, and then went on to work as a Lecturer in Behavioural Science in Carlow Institute of Technology. She joined the Psychology Department in NUI Galway in 1997 with responsibility for directing research training in the school as Research Methods Co-ordinator as well as lecturing in Behavioural Medicine and Applied Health Psychology. Jane is the currently Director of the MSc in Health Psychology and Director of the Structured PhD Programme in Psychology and Health. She was also the Chair of the Psychological Society of Ireland Division of Health Psychology. Jane Walsh has over 20 years' experience in teaching and research in Health Psychology. She has been to the forefront of developing Health Psychology in Ireland and was a member of the committee  that set up the National Division of Health Psychology (as part of Psychological Society of Ireland). Jane was responsible for initiating and chairing the first ever meeting of the Division of Health Psychology Scientific Conference (Psychology Health and Medicine) which she has chaired since on several occasions. This scientific conference has now been running for over 10 years and has gone from strength to strength.

Jane is actively involved in the international Health Psychology community (she is currently a member
of the International Advisory Board for the British Journal of Health Psychology and is the National Delegate for Ireland in the European Health Psychology Society). Jane's research is primarily applied in nature and she has worked on several multidisciplinary collaborations, working with doctors, nurses, public health practitioners, and economists. She has over 20 peer reviewed publications in national and international journals and regularly presents at national and international conferences.

Her research interests include:
  • M-health: Using new technologies to drive interventions to change health behaviours.
  • Promoting preventative health behaviours including: Cancer screening, vaccination, self-monitoring, exercise participation.
  • The development and evaluation of theory-based interventions to:
    • Change health behaviours
    • Reduce pain and anxiety in patients undergoing stressful medical procedures
  • Methods of expertise include:
    • Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs)
    • Multivariate statistical analysis
    • Use of online interventions (and new technologies to promote behaviour change)

Jane teaches courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level in Health Psychology (PS541, PS339, PS322, PS581) and Research Methods (PS219, PS405, PS579). She supervises students at PhD, DClinPsych, MSc and BA level.

Research Interests

Jane Walsh's primary research interest is in the area of Health Behaviour change with a particular focus on the use of M-health technologies and she is the Director of the M-health Research Group in NUI Galway. Jane has particular expertise in the management of Randomised Controlled Trials and in the development of theory-based interventions.

Jane’s research has focused mainly on developing health behaviour interventions in both a public health domain and in health care settings, with a particular focus on preventive health behaviours (e.g. exercise, diet, screening, vaccination). M-health as an emerging technology lends itself to increased self-monitoring which has been shown to be an effective tool in behaviour change interventions.

Jane has worked in several multidisciplinary teams to develop theory-based interventions in applied settings and has obtained funding for her research from the HRB, HSE Western Region and Mid-Western Region, and the Millennium Fund and published her research internationally in high quality journals.
