Biography

Research Interests

o    Syntactic Characteristics of Verbs
Research on German verbs has indicated that the syntactic characteristics of verbs (the number of arguments required by a verb and the number of compatible argument structures) influence processing of single verbs presented in a lexical decision task without any syntactic context. The number of arguments had an inhibitory influence while the number of argument structures facilitated verb processing. Following from the work on syntactic characteristics of German verbs there is a line of current research into syntactic characteristics of verbs in French (in collaboration with Sarah Berthaud).

o    Irish/English Bilingualism

The use of both English and Irish in both Irish society and education system offers the possibility to compare acquisition of both languages. Some children who grow up as monolingual English speakers are immersed into all Irish schools where during the first few years the exclusive medium of teaching is Irish. Native speakers of Irish are exposed to English through media from very early age, and also through education later in life. All children educated through English learn Irish as second language. We compare narrative production, use of grammar, code switching and intrusions in those different groups. This research is conducted collaboration with Conchúr Ó Giollagáin and Mary-Pat O’Malley.

Consultancy

  Client Description
Individual consultancy and training in public presentation in the English and German languages. Individual consultancies included dealing with the fear of public exposure, the development of personal presentation skills, practising voice articulation during public presentation, strategies for conveying confidence via body language and facial expression and presentation design. The course emphasised the development of a personal presentation style. Projects have included individual consultancies for members of the European Patent Office, members of the Technical and Ludwig-Maximilians Universities.
Organization of psychological skills workshops accompanied by 1-1 consultancies for athletics coaches and the individual athletes. These dealt with overcoming periods of poor performance, maintaining motivation during preparation for meetings, practising relaxation after sports training and more intensive psychological preparation in the run-up to competition. Organization of workshops and workshops/consultancies for coaches and team managers, concentrated on interpersonal relationships with individual athletes and the recognition of the athlete¿s personal and professional problems.
