Prof. Terry Smith BA Mod, MA, D.PHIL
Professor Terry Smith obtained a BA. Moderatorship Degree in Microbiology, from Trinity College Dublin, in 1981. He was employed as a research scientist in the R&D division of a multinational pharmaceutical company (G.D. Searle, High Wycombe, UK) from 1981 until 1984, where he worked on optimised recombinant protein production systems. In 1984, he undertook a Ph.D. degree at Oxford University, where his studies were focused on investigating the molecular basis of the devastating human genetic disease, Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). Prof. Smith was awarded a D. Phil. degree from Oxford University in 1988. Having completed a Muscular Dystrophy Society post-doctoral Fellowship at Oxford, Prof. Smith was awarded a European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO) Long-term Post-doctoral Fellowship to work in the laboratory of Professor Oliver Smithies, 2007 Nobel Laureate in Medicine, at the University of North Carolina (UNC), Chapel Hill. He spent two years at UNC, Chapel Hill, where he worked on the development of an animal model for human atherosclerosis using mouse embryonic stem cells. In 1990, Prof. Smith took up a Senior Research Scientist/Team Leader position at the National Diagnostics Centre (BioResearch Ireland) at NUI Galway, where he headed up the DNA Diagnostics laboratory. In 1994, Prof. Smith was appointed General Manager of the National Diagnostics Centre, a post he held until 2001.
| My research is primarily focused on the use of functional genomics approaches to understand the molecular basis of human disease. This work involves the identification of genes, whose expression patterns are altered under disease conditions, determining their disease-association and analysing their functional significance. My main research interests in which I have active programmes are:
1. Molecular and cellular basis of complications of pregnancy and labour. Investigation of the molecular and cellular basis of complications of pregnancy and parturition to understand the underlying mechanisms involved in the process of labour particularly during preterm birth in reproductive tissues, including in particular myometrium.
2. Cellular interactions between novel biomaterials and vascular cells. Investigation of the molecular and cellular interactions between novel biomaterials with vascular cells and tissues, which has as a major goal, understanding and modulating the body's response to implant materials. I have one patent application filed in the biomaterials area.
3. Nucleic acid-based diagnostics assays for infectious disease. I also have a long-standing and ongoing research interest related to the development of nucleic acid-based diagnostics assays for infectious disease, an area in which I have 2 granted patents and 12 filed patent applications.
