Biography

Tony is a Professor of Education in the School of Education, University of Galway. He is Director of Educational Design Research for Designing Futures (funded by the Higher Education Authority's Human Capital Initiative (HCI) Pillar 3).
Tony is a Principal Investigator (and Co-Founder) of T-REX (Teachers' Research Exchange (national online platform for teacher research) www.t-rex.ie (funded by the Teaching Council, National Council for Curriculum and Assessment and Department of Education).
He has served as editor-in-chief for two of Ireland's leading educational publications: Irish Educational Studies and Education Matters/Education Matters Yearbook.
He is General Editor Emeritus of Irish Educational Studies, Ireland's principal educational research journal, published internationally by Routledge/Taylor & Francis. University of Galway's first General Editor of IES, Tony concluded his term as editor-in-chief in December 2023, having served for 8 years in editorial for the journal: 5 years as Co-Editor (2015-2020) and 3 as General Editor (2020-2023). As General Editor, he has led the journal to its strongest position in its 43-year history; between 2020-2023, the journal's Impact Factor more than trebled to 1.7, and readership increased from an annual total of 64,785 full-text downloads in 2020 to 244,214 in 2023. Journal innovations he has led include special issues of the journal on digital education futures and educational design research; COVID-19 and its impact on education in Ireland and internationally; and an inaugural issue specifically for early career researchers in education, published online in November and in print December 2023.
As General Editor, he also led on removal of all plastic lamination (both gloss and matte) from the outside covers of print issues of Irish Educational Studies. This has helped to improve the journal's sustainable publication. As emeritus, he remains a member of the editorial board of Irish Educational Studies
In 2012, 2013 & 2014, Tony was the Editor of the Education Matters Yearbook: Ireland's Educational Yearbook.
Tony serves on the editorial boards of several international journals, including Journal of Computer-Assisted Learning; and in 2022 was appointed Academic Advisor for Routledge Open Research. Since 2007, he has been an invited expert on educational design, technology, and research e-infrastructures for the European Commission; and advises the Teaching Council on educational research.
Tony has served as both Head and Deputy Head (two terms) of the School of Education, and inaugural Vice-Dean for Learning, Teaching and Assessment in the College of Arts, Social Sciences & Celtic Studies, University of Galway. He was the University of Galway lead in the development of the UL-University of Galway accredited, national, bilingual and blended Professional Diploma in Mathematics for Teaching (PDMT) programme, funded by the Department of Education to up-skill out-of-field mathematics teachers in Irish secondary schools nationwide. Tony teaches across all teacher education programmes in the School of Education, and has previously served as inaugural Joint Programme Director (Education) of the BA Mathematics and Education, having led its educational design and accreditation by the Teaching Council in 2008.
His research interests focus primarily on educational design research, innovation and technology in education. This entails exploring the potential of design-based research (DBR) as a change-driven, solution-oriented research methodology in different educational contexts and settings, elective and formal.
Tony also maintains research and teaching interests in disciplines that provide a critical perspective on educational design and innovation including, in particular, the history and philosophy of education. Widely published in education, educational design and technology, he has undertaken design-based research across diverse educational contexts and settings, including primary and post-primary classrooms and schools; museums and science centres; and further, continuing and higher education. His research has explored the potential of a range of technologies in education, including digital storytelling; mixed and virtual realities; blended learning; e-learning platforms and systems; and mobile and haptic technologies.
Tony is a graduate of concurrent initial teacher education from the University of Limerick (BA in Physical Education & English), and he holds a Master of Information Technology (MIT) from the University of Galway.
Tony completed his PhD at the Interaction Design Centre (IDC), University of Limerick, exploring the design of ubiquitous computing in education. He completed his post-doctoral education as
Research Fellow in Learning Sciences at the Learning Sciences Research Institute (LSRI), University of Nottingham; and Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) visiting researcher at the Center for Informal Learning and Schools (CILS), The Exploratorium (Museum of Science, Art and Human Perception), San Francisco.
Tony was appointed Lecturer in Educational Technology in the School of Education, University of Galway in 2006, promoted to Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in 2017 and to Full Professor in 2022.
Tony was formerly a secondary school teacher of physical education, English, ICT, mathematics and SPHE, and a school ICT coordinator. He is a Fellow of the International Society for Design and Development in Education (ISDDE), and he brought the 14th Annual International ISDDE Conference to Ireland/Galway for the first time in 2018.
His book on design-based research, narrative and educational technology was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2018, as a featured title in its DEAL (Digital Education and Learning) Series https://www.palgrave.com/us/book/9781137320070. Tony is a Principal Investigator of the European-funded projects, i2i (Idea to Impact) (funded by the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT)/Horizon Europe); BRIST (Building a Research Infrastructure for School Teachers) https://www.4teacheresearch.org; and DEIMP (Designing & Evaluating Innovative Mobile Pedagogies) http://www.deimpeu.com/.
He has supervised 11 PhDs to completion, in education and design-based research/technology-enhanced learning; collaboratively developed the Structured PhD (Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences); and led the design and development of the Structured PhD in Learning Sciences, University of Galway.
