Professor Malini Olivo
Olivo's distinguished career
Prof Malini Olivo is a newly appointed Stokes Professor of Biophotonics at the National University Ireland, Galway. She also holds a visiting Professorship in Harvard Medical School . She obtained a PhD in Bio-Medical Physics in 1990 and since been active in translating nano-biophotonics science from the bench to the clinic for biomedical diagnostics and therapeutics in Canada, Singapore ad now Ireland. She did pioneering biophotonics research in medicine for the early detection of cancer using novel minimally invasive endoscopic optical techniques and for the treatment of cancer using light activation of drugs that target cancer. She has published widely in both the medical and scientific field and has received numerous research awards for her contribution to the field. In 2011, the international society for photonics engineering will honour her as 1 among 12 women who have made significant contribution to photonics research and education.
