Emma Brinton, JE Cairnes School of Business & Economics

The award to Emma Brinton is in recognition of her considerable contribution to the success of the Executive MBA and Skills Programme.

In any given year, Emma is required to provide support to 1200 students including support for peer-assisted learning, skills workshops, individual interviews, and engagement with industry partners and local business leaders, who act as mentors for the final year Enterprise and Entrepreneurship module.

The Executive MBA is accredited by the Association for MBA. Maintaining the accreditation is a challenging and arduous exercise. Emma takes a full and active role on the programme board, and works as an equal partner with the programme director in identifying innovative solutions relevant to the programme.

Emma is regarded by MBA participants, colleagues, and associates as being outstanding in terms of her administrative efficiency, programme knowledge, quality assurance and in her commitment to excellence across all customer groups. She is critical to building and maintaining exceptional relations between the MBA programme and its participants, alumni, and industry partners.

Gerardine Moloney, Research Support Officer (Finance), NCBES

The award to Gerardine Moloney is in recognition of her contribution to the restructuring and ongoing development of the NCBES.

Gerardine was central to supporting the coordination of research groups and individuals from the south campus to the new Biomedical Sciences building on the north campus, and to the transfer of highly sensitive management systems, while she continued to respond effectively to the needs of NCBES scientists dispersed elsewhere on campus.  Among her many achievements has been her contribution to NCBES core facilities—to the establishment, for example, of the Flow Cytometry Core Facility, and to the fee-for-service charging system, which has ensured the quality, sustainability and ongoing incremental improvement of the FCCF.

Gerardine is a highly respected member of the NCBES team, who is regarded by her colleagues and associates as solutions-focused, enthusiastic, committed, flexible, eager to help, and willing to go the extra mile for the benefit of the NCBES research community.

Nicola McNicholas, Management Accountant, Management Accounting Office

The award to Nicola McNicholas is in recognition of the enormous contribution that she has made to furthering gender equality and a more inclusive community at NUI Galway in her role as Project Manager to the Gender Equality Task Force.

She was a key force in managing the work of the cross-institutional Task Force, supporting them in their discussions and analysis, in formulating their Recommendations and in producing the Report of the Gender Equality Task Force, which has attracted national and international recognition.

Nicola has demonstrated exceptional dedication and remarkable energy in her management of a flagship project which will have a positive and lasting impact on gender equality at NUI Galway.

Ann Ryan, Head of Research Development, Research Office

The award is in recognition of Ann Ryan’s dedication to supporting NUI Galway’s research community and the University’s ambitious research targets. Her approach and commitment has played a substantial role in raising NUI Galway’s research profile and reputation.

In particular, the Assessment Board noted her outstanding leadership during a period of 18 months when the Research Office underwent significant staffing challenges. Ann cultivated a positiveteam spirit, filled vacant roles, supported and mentored new staff, while maintaining consistent levels of excellent service to the research community. During this period, she also represented the University at IUA and SFI level and developed NUI Galway’s responses to a number of external research-related consultations that were in process.

She is highly respected by our research community, amongst her peers in partner institutions, and within the funding agency community.

Lorraine Tansey, Student Volunteer Co-ordinator, Community Knowledge Initiative, ILAS

From a baseline of 20 participants in 2005, Lorraine Tansey has pioneered a volunteer programme at NUI Galway, which now formally recognises at least 1,000 university student volunteers every year.   She has influenced national policy and practice across Ireland in the development of volunteering in other higher education institutions, and has worked tirelessly with community partners, students and the university to broker creative partnerships. As a result of her energy and vision, NUI Galway was the first higher education institution to gain national accreditation from Comhlámh and the largest award recipients of the national President’s Gaisce award for service. It is also the largest award recipients for the national Volunteer Ireland awards and the national Global Citizens Award.

Lorraine has also worked with the Irish Universities Association and Campus Engage on a two-year project to develop StudentVolunteer.ie – a national online student civic engagement platform for all Higher Education Institutions of Ireland, which matches students with volunteering opportunities to impact change in their communities.
