Patients will be referred to the study by their GP or pain consultant.
Patients must be screened as medically suitability to take part in a programme which
will increase their level of activity.
Inclusion criteria:
- Over 18 years.
- Presents with non-malignant back pain.
- Pain present for at least 6 weeks.
- Patient is off work or on reduced work hours due to back pain.
- If the patient has recurrent back pain, this episode must be a distinct reoccurance.
If a patient fits the inclusion criteria they can be given a Patient Information Leaflet.

The patient is asked to read the information and return the consent form to NUI Galway. If the patient returns this consent form and indicates their interest in taking part in the trial, they will be contacted by the research team.
Patients who show elevated yellow flags following screening will be included in the trial. Those randomly assigned to the intervention condition will be able to access 10 individual sessions with a psychologist trained in pain management.
