If you have experienced back pain for less than 12 months duration, you may be given an information leaflet and consent form by your GP inviting you to take part in this study.

Please read the information leaflet and if you are happy to take part then please return the consent form to us at NUI Galway.

When you have returned the consent form you will be sent a questionnaire booklet to complete at home. This will take about 20 mins to complete. We will then let you know if you are suitable to take part in the study. This will be based on your particular level of disability.

If you are suitable to take part, you will be randomly assigned to receive either Treatment as Usual or Treatment as Usual plus Intervention’. The intervention will involve weekly meetings with a psychologist in your area. It is important to understand that it is not the psychologists role to tell you that you are imagining your pain but rather to support you in what is a very difficult situation. It will also focus on increasing your activity levels at a pace you feel comfortable with. Being part of the study will not affect any aspect of your usual medical care.
