The Diploma in Philosophy is a two-year programme, commencing September 2004.
The Diploma in Philosophy is a single subject and part time programme for Evening Arts students at NUI, Galway. It comprises 48 lecture weeks in which 6 different modules are taught. Three modules are taught each year, and there are 24 lectures in each module.
The aims of the programme are to provide students with a sound knowledge of the history of philosophy and its impact on Western Anglo-American, Irish and Continental societies and cultures, to train them in critical thinking and problem solving, especially in the areas of the principles of ethics, politics, education and the critique of ideologies.
Knowledge and skills in any of the areas mentioned above are not only essential for Philosophy as an academic subject but for the education to enlightened citizenship in general.
The course is particularly suited for mature students or students who - for reasons of work, travel or family arrangements - can only attend evening courses.
Diploma of Philosophy students are trained in systematic research and critical deliberation in reading, writing and oral presentation of the principles of ethics, politics, and education. The continuous analysis of texts of the history of philosophy written in different European languages as well as the use of contemporary information systems help to broaden communicative skills of students of philosophy in a unique way. Linguistic and information technology skills form an essential requirement of modern education, the social service, mass media, commerce, business or industry.
The Diploma in Philosophy is comprised of six different modules. Three modules are offered each year. Each module has two parts: Part I is taught in semester 1, part II in semester II. Each module has an ECTS weighting of 5. Students must successfully complete a minimum of 30 credits to be awarded a Diploma.
Each module is examined by written examination at the end of each year, 50% of the total mark, and by continuous assessment involving essay writing, which contributes to the remaining 50% of its overall result.
Modular links to other part time elements of courses in Sociology and Politics, History or other Arts College subjects are possible.
Particular modules of the course may be taken by other Evening Arts courses offered by NUI, Galway. No module may be taken from other Evening Arts courses offered by NUI, Galway to replace a Diploma in Philosophy module.
The usual entry requirements for College of Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies Diploma courses obtain.
The fee for 2004/05 will be €980 (Euro).
