Master of Letters
The M.Litt. Degree is a "thesis only" programme: it can be acquired by writing a major thesis under the supervision of a member of the Department of Philosophy. Although any topic in philosophy will be considered, it is advisable to seek supervision of a project that relates to the areas of specialization of department members, such as political theory, contemporary ethics, bioethics, philosophy of science, Aristotle, Heidegger, Levinas, hermeneutics, phenomenology, philosophy of mind, Irish Thought, philosophy of medicine, philosophy of psychiatry.
Aims and objectives:
To afford suitably qualified students the opportunity to write a thesis on a philosophical topic, under supervision by a member of the Department.
Entry requirements:
Only applicants with at least a Second Class Honours Grade II degree overall, and with at least a Second Class Honours Grade I in Philosophy, will be considered for admission to the M.Litt programme. Applications must be accompanied by a research proposal and a sample of written work.
Tuition: Independent research, under supervision by a member of the Department.
Assessment:
The thesis will be assessed by an internal examiner (the supervisor) and an external examiner.
Marks and Standards:
Pass:- 40%
2nd Class Honours 60%
1st Class Honours 70%
